Composability
Extending a CAN system is relatively simple – in the beginning. The prevalent communication system adds a new message and assigns an identifier to it. The inherent problem surfaces not until the testing of such an extended CAN system. Any new message of chance of the application modifies the behaviour of the communication system – with all the consequences.
In order to avoid such pitfalls like, the FlexRay standard has put an emphasis on composability from the very beginning of its development. Both the static and dynamic segments strictly adhere to the exclusive ownership of slots and it is possible (e.g., for a Tier 1) to develop ECUs autonomously and (e.g., for the OEM) to integrate them later without side effects.
