How to make use of AUTOSAR

Initial experiences with AUTOSAR projects have shown that only a reorientation of software development allows to tap the great potential of the standard.

Electronic Control Unit (ECU) software solutions based on the AUTOSAR standard give suppliers a powerful tool to realise the complexity of automotive software applications cost-effectively. AUTOSAR can drastically increase efficiency when developing ECU software. The standard is based on the fundamental idea that basic services are widely available and that competitive advantages are generated in the development of application software, such as the control logic for vehicle dynamics. Experiences with initial series projects clearly show that OEMs and suppliers will have to take a different approach in order to exhaust the great potential of AUTOSAR. If both the transfer of expertise and the development or migration of software architecture are working well, then the first step towards increasing efficiency in software development has been taken. It therefore stands to reason that if both the new architecture and the expertise of the project team are inadequate, then old methods of problem solving in software projects will no longer be effective.
